Quick History of Vassar !

Here on the Cass River on March 1, 1849, four men led by Townsend North and James M. Edmunds found a suitable place to build a dam and start a town, which was named for Edmunds' Uncle, Matthew Vassar, later the founder of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. The growth of the town for the next 30 years was based on lumbering and its many related industries. Cork pine, the best variety of white pine, grew in abundance along the mighty Cass River and was in high demand. These trees of the forest grew to a height of 150 feet, often with diameters exceeding three feet. The wood was light and strong and easy to work with. Millions of board feet were marketed all over the world, especially in America's prairie states. With the forests depleted, Vassar developed a diversified economy that is still evident today in agriculture, manufacturing, and commerical business. The rich history has helped Vassar earn its popular nickname that is known around the state-the Cork Pine City. In 1999 Vassar celebrated its sesquicentennial. Events were held through the year in celebration.

January 26, 2012 - CHILL ON THE HILL UPDATE

At the final planning meeting for the 2012 “Chill on the Hill”, it was decided that event would be cancelled for 2012.  Unseasonably warm weather and a lack of available snow were the driving forces behind this decision.  It is a great disappointment to the entire planning committee that after several months of work we are not able to proceed.  Unfortunately, the one thing that we cannot control is the weather and the conditions this year simply will not allow us to proceed with a successful event.

I would like to thank all of our generous sponsors that stepped forward to help make this event happen.  Our Polar Bear sponsors for 2012 are: Cook GM, ITC, Larsen Graphics, Vassar Chamber of Commerce, Vassar Building Center, Vassar DDA, Vassar EDC, Vassar Recycling, Vassar Rotary, Vassar True Value Hardware, and Wolgast Corporation.  Our Penguin sponsors for 2012 are: The Coffee Beanery, Frankenmuth Credit Union, McDonalds, Rowe Engineering, and Wolverine Human Services.  Our Snowflake sponsors for 2012 are: Blossom Chiropractic, Catholic Federal Credit Union, Chase Bank, Emil Rummel Agency, Goforth Ceramic Tile, Heritage Hill Assisted Living, Martin Funeral Home, Mid-State Title Services, Shriji Physical Therapy, Timber Oaks Landscaping, and Vassar Historical Society.

In addition to our sponsors, I would like to thank all of the individuals that gave hours of their time working on making this event happen.  In particular, the following individuals should be recognized:

Mike Sanders for his help in designing and procuring materials to build the new starting platform.  Kyle Trisch of Vassar High School for spending his personal time building the starting platform which we will use for years to come.  Sandy Keyes for her efforts in organizing all the vendors and children’s activities.  Judy Adams for her incredible job of promoting the event across the entire state.  Dr. Nancy Wade for working on volunteer job descriptions and the event layouts.  All of the individuals with the following organizations who attended all of our planning meetings: Vassar Masons, Grace Lutheran Church, Vassar Chamber of Commerce, Vassar Girl Scouts, Vassar Presbyterian Church, Vassar United Methodist Church and the City of Vassar.

Because sweatshirts and long sleeve T-shirts were already printed for the event, we will be selling these at City Hall.  Anyone interested in purchasing a Sweatshirt or T-Shirt can contact City Hall at (989) 823-8517.

The Chill on the Hill will return in 2013, we have nearly finished construction on the new starting platform.  New tubes are purchased and ready to be used.  Once we have snow, we will have an exciting event for all ages.  See you next February!
